The Christmas 2011 edition of A3, the quarterly newsletter of the NHS Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme, has now been published and can be downloaded from http://aaa.screening.nhs.uk/Newsletter.
The newsletter includes:
- Secretary of State for Health Andrew Lansley launches Phase Three of the programme’s national implementation
- AAA screening pioneer Alan Scott receives lifetime achievement award
- Daily Mail article leads to huge surge in self-referrals
- NHS AAA Screening Programme ratifies new quality standards for AAA surgery
The 2010-11 Annual Report of the NHS AAA Screening Programme has now also been published. The report describes the key achievements and challenges during the second full year of screening for AAA under the national programme.
Highlights include:
- Successful implementation of the Phase One and Phase Two programmes, leading to AAA screening covering approximately 40% of England by the end of the year: the National Programme remains on course to cover the whole of England by the end of March 2013
- More than 37,000 AAA screening tests were carried out
- The 1,000th aneurysm was detected since the start of the national programme in 2009
- More than 100 men with large AAA were referred to vascular surgeons
- The University of Salford was appointed as the programme's national training provider
