COVID 19 - Message from the President

26th Mar 2020

Dear All,

Hope you are all keeping safe and well during these difficult times. The rapidly evolving situation regarding the COVID-19 virus is impacting our patients greatly including particular additional challenges for us as healthcare workers.

Information about the global spread of coronavirus is changing rapidly, and guidance and resources published by the UK Government is being updated regularly. It is therefore important to follow the advice individual trusts and employers are releasing as this is pertinent to the local situation and will be in line with government advice.

BMUS have issued guidance for Sonographers during the Covid-19 outbreak which is attached to this email (also available on the SVT website). Some important points from the information include:

  • Always wear appropriate PPE when scanning Covid +ve or suspected Covid +ve Patients (testing maybe required)
  • Limit the number of patients in the department at one time and limit/refuse visitors into the unit.
  • Only perform assessments on Covid +ve patients if clinically essential
  • Try to avoid Covid +ve patients coming to the department.
  • If a Covid-19 patient has to come to the department use a dedicated room and scan at the end of the day.
  • Full decontamination of the scan room and ultrasound machine must be done.
  • Ensure good social distancing at all times.
  • Consider cancelling non-urgent outpatient appointments.
  • Protect at risk colleagues (pregnant, underlying heath issues) from exposure.

Below are further links to other important resources you may consider reviewing on a daily basis due to the rapidly changing nature of the situation.

All SVT revision days plus all theory and practical exams have been postponed until further notice as per the email you received earlier in the week. Depending on the length of the disruption further changed maybe necessary but we will keep you all updated as and when needed.

The SVT community is a small but strong and resilient group and I trust that no matter what happens over the coming weeks or months we will face the challenges with professionalism, integrity and team work. If any members wish to share any advice, comments or important information to the SVT community as a whole to help during these difficult times the SVT Facebook page is available to post comments and links.

Best Wishes and keep safe

Lee Smith

SVT President
