Theory Exams

SVT Theory Exams

SVT Theory Exams

In order to give our members increased flexibility the process for taking the SVT Theory Exams has changed.

Starting April 20th 2021 you can now apply for and take either examination all year-round either online (using a proctoring system) or in person at a Pearson Vue test centre (please follow the link below for more details and how to book).

The theory exams can be taken in person using an electronic system at a Pearson Vue test centre located around the UK.

The current test centres are located in London, Belfast, Crawley, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Reading, Salford (Manchester), Sutton Coldfield (Midlands), Watford and Dublin (New Horizons test centre)

*NEW STARTING SPRING 2021- The exam can be taken via the Pearson VUE’s OnVUE online proctoring system

This system allows candidates to take their theory test from a PC at home or at work without the need to travel to a test centre. This is a secure online proctored system which ensures the candidate can complete the exam in a similar way as they would in a test centre environment.

Please ensure you carefully follow the instructions on the link given regarding system requirements and the exam taking process.

The cost is £125 for each exam taken. Candidates must be current members of the SVT in order to take these exams.

If you wish to retake a failed exam you must wait a minimum of 3 calendar months after your first failed exam before sitting your next exam.

Any candidates requiring additional examination time should contact the SVT theory examination officer in advance of application through ARDMS.  Contact details are provided below. Candidates will be required to provide documentation/evidence of their needs for extra time to complete the examination.

Please be aware that the slots at the Pearson Vue centres fill up on a first come first served basis and therefore you may not receive your first choice appointment time or location.

Applicants will receive their score reports immediatly after completion of the exam.

The primary test result will be a PASS or FAIL decision. In addition you will receive a scaled score, ranging from 300 to 700. A scaled score of 555 is required to pass both theory examinations.

The scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, nor is it built on a "curve" where a certain percentage of scores would pass and a certain percentage would fail.
